California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Martha Dickinson Bianchi (1866-1943) was the niece of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), and daughter of William Austin Dickinson (1829-1895) and Susan Huntington Dickinson (1830-1913). As the sole surviving member of the Dickinson family, she edited several collections of Emily Dickinson's work, and wrote two Dickinson biographies.
